The PDF preserved fidelity. It never learned to preserve relevance.
For thirty years the PDF has carried the world’s most important ideas as frozen snapshots. For ten years Tiled has been turning static content into interactive content. The next five years turn interactive content into intelligent content: a document that assembles itself for one reader, adapts as they engage with it, proves what happened, and makes the next one better.
Where this comes from
In 1991 a six-page memo changed how people work.
John Warnock’s Camelot paper asked for something simple: capture a document from any application, send it anywhere, and view it on any machine. Adobe built the PDF, and the fundamental way people communicate changed. Thirty years later the PDF viewer is embedded in every operating system, every mail client, every browser. An estimated 2.5 billion PDFs are created every day.
“If this problem can be solved, then the fundamental way people work will change.”
John Warnock, The Camelot Project, 1991
We started Tiled because the problem had changed and the document had not. Today’s challenge is the ability to communicate interactive material across every device, platform and system, with the security and data expectations of a modern enterprise. The PDF preserved fidelity. It never learned to preserve relevance.
What a document has always been
Four properties every document has had since the first one was a rock.
A document is permanent, so it can serve as evidence and proof. It is interpretable, so it can be read anywhere. It is portable, so it is self-contained and discrete. And it is accessible, so anyone can make one without special training. The Microapp keeps all four. Then it adds what the PDF could not.
Permanent
Serves as evidence and proof, in the short term and the long term.
Interpretable
Can be read and viewed anywhere, on any device.
Portable
Self-contained and discrete. It travels as one thing.
Accessible
Created and opened by anyone, without special training.
Interactive New
The experience is part of how information is understood.
Personal New
Relevant to the individual reading it, not the average reader.
Proof of engagement New
What was seen, done and signed is part of the record.
Extensible New
Transactions, calculators, forms and logic, without code.
What AI changed
Two of those properties stayed aspirational for a decade. Generation makes them possible.
“Personal” used to mean a designer building variants. “Proof of engagement” used to mean analytics someone read after the fact. We think of the intelligent document as four layers, and the first two have been shipping for ten years. The second two are what generative AI finally makes possible.
Layer 1Shipping
Presentation
The visual surface. Assets from the tools designers already use, assembled or generated.
Layer 2Shipping
Behavioral
Flows, states, navigation and interactivity. Where behavior data is produced.
Layer 3Next
Semantic
The intent and role of every component. Where profile data enters and the document assembles itself for one reader.
Layer 4Next
Cognitive
Adaptive intelligence that emerges from engagement, feedback and learning. Where performance data is produced.
Generation collapses the cost of the first two layers. The Semantic layer lets a document know who it is for. The Cognitive layer, trained on a decade of Microapps and a hundred million sessions, lets it learn. That is the whole reason this year looks different from the last ten.
Three shifts
What changes when the document gets intelligent.
Production cost goes to near zero.
A seller never waits on a designer. The right document is a prompt, a template or a CRM record away, inside guardrails the brand sets once.
The document knows who it’s for.
Profile data tells it who is reading. Behavior tells it where they are. Performance tells it what works. It adapts, and it learns.
Engagement becomes the record.
What a reader saw, did and signed flows back to the systems a business runs on. The document becomes the proof of what happened.
The next five years
Three horizons. One direction.
Collapse the cost of production.
Generation from any starting point: a prompt, a template, an existing deck or PDF, a personalization workflow. Governance that lets a brand set the boundaries once so every seller can move freely inside them. The person who sends the document becomes the person who makes it.
The document gets intelligent.
Every component knows its role, so the document assembles itself from the data a business already has. The engine learns from every session, so engagement intelligence stops describing what happened and starts recommending what to do next. Approvals and signatures happen inside the document, and the result writes back to the record.
An open standard.
A portable, open format for the intelligent document, and a universal viewer embedded wherever people already work, the way PDF viewers are embedded in every operating system. Tiled as its steward rather than its owner. Engagement in the billions, every document making the next one better.
Why a standard
The PDF won because anyone could open it. The next document wins because it can open you.
A format that only its maker can render is a feature. A format every system can open is a standard. We believe the intelligent document should be the second kind: published, portable, and governed in the open, so that the content a company builds outlives any single vendor relationship, including ours. The audit trail of what each reader saw and did becomes something a compliance officer can rely on. The corpus of engagement becomes something the whole ecosystem learns from.
In 1991, the paper-to-digital revolution.
In 2021, static-to-interactive.
Now, static-to-intelligent.
Where we are
We’ve already started walking in this direction.
Tiled Microapps have carried finalist presentations, proposals, onboarding and product stories for ten years, with a corpus of more than ninety-five thousand Microapps and a hundred million recipient sessions behind them. Generation is live. Governance is shipping. The Semantic and Cognitive layers are what the next five years are for.
We’ll keep publishing what ships, and what we learn, here.
